I do not know if you have reach a decision on your mascot yet or not. The most recent update on the website states “August 19, 2020” and seems to imply there has yet to be a change. I thought your discussion might benefit from some different insights and perspectives regarding the people your mascot “represents” in addition to some basic history that, as an originally public school educated mixed race citizen, I know is not taught on any level. Before continuing further, I feel it would be uncouth not to also acknowledge the sheer absurdity that this conversation must be had at all. All that has to be done, to not offend an entire peoples, is change a logo and a name. Even the most basic moral compass should not need an explanation as to why that should already have been accomplished. But here we are.
First it is important to also note without any misunderstanding, misrepresentation, or bias, that the current state of affairs in which we are faced with the context of this discussion is rooted in a multi-generational history of racism, genocide, and purposeful oppression and brutality. The Indian Policies which this country operated under, and openly funded with both massive manpower and financial resources in addition to the great efforts put forth in anti-indian propaganda production were directly praised by none other than Adolf Hitler himself. They would go on to serve not only as the inspiration for his camps and ghettos, but the Reservation systems *still in place today* would serve as the very model for his attempt at the complete division and eventual destruction of the Jewish people. That is a pretty uncomfortable thing to acknowledge, but it is a vital part of the American story if we are to understand it in its current form at all. It is well understood (or at least hoped) that the average American today probably does not support or even entertain the idea of genocide even in a general sense, but it is also necessary to see and understand that in the past however, that thought was not only commonplace but easily perpetuated.
In 1928, Hitler remarked, approvingly, that white settlers in America had “gunned down the *millions* of redskins to a few hundred thousand.” When he spoke of ‘Lebensraum’, as he often famously did, which was the German drive for “living space” in Eastern Europe, it well understood that he had a very American inspired sort of Manifest Destiny in mind. Hitler praises America as the one state that has made progress toward a primarily racial conception of citizenship, by “excluding certain races from naturalization” and as such, the discussion of such influences on history and our own country to this day are either taboo or omitted entirely. Please keep in mind, the purpose of this information and this email is not to say “by having a red raider mascot you are perpetuating Nazism” I am simply providing a background for those who may not understand the broader weight such an image carries, and why it is inherently disrespectful and clearly rooted in racism and genocide and thus seen as a symbolic slap in the face to those who not only know their history, but are forced to live out the consequences of it struggling to retain their languages, traditions, and ancient histories already hanging in the balance for survival by a thread. Perspective is important. This leads me to an old dialogue I have heard shared in various forms to those who will listen over the years:

The Native elder responded, “Here’s what you’ve got to understand. When you look at black people, you see ghosts of all the slavery and the rapes and the hangings and the chains. When you look at Jews, you see ghosts of all those bodies piled up in death camps. And those ghosts keep you trying to do the right thing. But when you look at us, you don’t see the ghosts of the little babies with their heads smashed in by rifle butts at the Big Hole, or the old folks dying by the side of the trail on the way to Oklahoma while their families cried and tried to make them comfortable, or the dead mothers and their infants displayed on the ends of bayonets for photo ops at Wounded Knee, or the little kids at Sand Creek who were shot for target practice. You don’t see any ghosts at all…
Instead you see casinos and drunks and junk cars and shacks. Well, we see those ghosts. And they make our hearts sad and they hurt our children. And when we try to say something, you tell us, ‘Get over it. This is America. Look at the American dream.’ But as long as you’re calling us Redskins and doing tomahawk chops, we can’t look at the American dream, because those things remind us that we are not real human beings to you. To contrast this, and better understand the kind of sentiment that not only allows for a Bellefonte Red Raider mascot to persist, in addition to the historical poison that is wrapped up in the term redskin we have the words of none other than L. Frank Baum, author of the Wizard of Oz, from a newspaper editorial published for all to read at the time:
“…The Redskin is extinguished, and what few are left are a pack of whining curs who lick the hand that smites them. The Whites, by law of conquest, by justice of civilization, are masters of the American continent, and the best safety of the frontier settlements will be secured by the total annihilation of the few remaining Indians. Why not annihilation? Their glory has fled, their spirit broken, their manhood effaced; better that they die than live the miserable wretches that they are.”
This was L. Frank Baum’s specific response to the tragic Massacre at Wounded Knee of an estimated 300 Lakota people, most of which were unarmed and many women and children. As referenced briefly in the other text above, this event was known for its unrivaled brutality in which US soldiers were issued multiple Medals of Honor (one of the highest military honors that exist) and yet we have these accounts from both sides:
“There was a woman with an infant in her arms who was killed as she almost touched the flag of truce, and the women and children of course were strewn all along the circular village until they were dispatched. Right near the flag of truce a mother was shot down with her infant; the child not knowing that its mother was dead was still nursing, and that especially was a very sad sight. The women as they were fleeing with their babes were killed together, shot right through, and the women who were very heavy with child were also killed. All the Indians fled in these three directions, and after most all of them had been killed a cry was made that all those who were not killed or wounded should come forth and they would be safe. This is just one isolated example of the kind of history a “red” mascot spits in the face of and enables, unknowingly or otherwise. A legacy of a merciless disregard for life. The conquest of this country by settlers consists of thousands of Wounded Knees. You either condone it or you do not. You are either a part of the problem, or a part of the solution. It really is that simple. We can not change history, but we can change how we react to it and how we teach it to our children. Showing respect and having a dialogue, and a willingness to learn about and overcome our uncomfortable yet undeniably shared histories should not be so much to ask for and changing a school mascot while it is a simple gesture, it is also a very big one. As an ancestor of the indigenous Taino peoples myself, the tribe of “first contact” whose numbers dwindled from 23 million to a mere few thousand after the arrival of Columbus- everywhere in America there are still stark reminders of colonialism, slavery, and hundreds of years of oppression and racism by people who once deemed themselves superior. At this point, a little basic respect goes a long way.

On Thursday the Supreme Court issued its opinion in McGirt v. Oklahoma, finding 5-4 that because Congress never took the steps to disestablish the reservations of the Five Civilized Tribes when Oklahoma was granted statehood, the eastern part of the state remains "Indian country", including Tulsa, the state's 2nd largest city. The direct impact of the ruling is that the state of Oklahoma does not have jurisdiction in that area over enrolled Native Americans who are accused of crimes outlined in the Major Crimes Act. Instead, Native Americans will be tried by tribal or federal courts, and a small number of Native inmates in OK will be eligible for retrials -- people on death row in particular will seek this because tribes generally do not allow the federal government to execute their members.
Other than Gorsuch, who has experience with Indian law, the decision fell along party lines and the conservative dissent claims this will disrupt the governance of eastern OK more generally, and it won't simply stop with the state sending cases to federal/tribal courts. I don't really think the tribes are that interested in radically changing the status quo, although it probably gives them more leverage in their ongoing dispute with the governor (himself a registered Cherokee) over casino fees.
Trump himself hasn't commented on the case but a lot of conservatives[1][2][3] have already leveraged it as outrage bait and talk like this is a prelude to land expropriation which is absurd, although if you look at indigenous radlib twitter for too long you'd probably start to believe it. The decision could have not come at a worse time for inflaming people's perceptions; furthermore if I was black and in favor of reparations I would see this as an extremely strong argument in favor of it.
I'm curious how people here feel about this, and the idea of tribal sovereignty more generally. There's a decent diversity of thought and I think most have more nuanced positions than "give it all back, kick the colonizers out". It's worth noting that most of the people living in these newly-clarified reservations are not enrolled in a tribe and I would say that before this case, it was not an issue that the tribes actively pursued so most people would have never considered that they are living under anything but the state of Oklahoma's jurisdiction. On the other hand, given how incompetent the OK government is, I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of people here who would be more than willing to let tribes take over providing services even if it meant they couldn't have electoral representation.

Seminoles have lived in Florida since ancient times. For more than 40 years, they fought for their freedom in countless skirmishes and 3 bloody wars. But the forces were unequal, and in 1858, after the Third Seminole War, almost the entire tribe was evicted from their native lands to distant Oklahoma. Only about 200 Indians escaped the General sad fate and disappeared into the vast tropical swamps of the Everglades, where they engaged in cattle breeding, somehow making ends meet, because there were few pastures, more swamps. There, under the protection of Panthers, alligators, and malaria, they felt comparatively safe.
In early 1944, in Florida, a Seminole Agnes Billy of the Bird clan had a boy born out of wedlock. My father was an Irishman, a cadet at the naval aviation school that was based near the reservation. In 1943, he went to war without even knowing about his girlfriend's pregnancy. Mother called son Chukie, which means "the one who was taken."The shamans of the tribe did not recognize the half-breed baby and decided to get rid of it, sentencing it to death. The boy was saved from death by his mother's friend, Potaki, who was also a half-breed.
The women raised a terrible cry, the neighbors ran, and Potaki publicly vowed that she would inform the police if anyone touched the baby.
Jim Hukipi and his mother lived very poorly, and when he was 9 years old, she died. The first orphan was sheltered by his mother's parents, but soon became them, and Hokie homeless. But his rescuer Potaki, who felt responsible for the teenager, took care of him and kicked him to school. Over time, it became difficult to cope with the boy and he was sent to the Haskell boarding school in Kansas, a special school where they tried to teach the Indians how to become white. A few years later, with grief in half, Jim received a school diploma and returned.
Strong, cunning, agile, tough, and a natural leader, he was created to become a Ranger for the U.S. army. The Vietnam war was breaking out, and that was where he belonged. The jungle was like the Everglades, but without alligators,and the war was like hunting. Jim distinguished himself very soon, he was promoted to Sergeant, appointed commander of the Department, and began to give tasks more and more complex. Capture languages, raids behind enemy lines, reconnaissance and other activities of the Rangers he liked. His group often went on a knife edge, but always returned without loss. The blood of his brave ancestors played a role, and Jim could feel ambushes, traps, mines, and poisonous snakes on his skin. It seemed that luck would never leave him, and his companions were ready to follow him into the fire and water.
After serving a full term in the Inferno, he had every right to go back, but signed up for another term. Ranger didn't want to leave his comrades, but he liked the risk. Again, RAID after RAID, task after task, and success after success. Jim soon became a master Sergeant and Deputy platoon commander. He would have been sent to officer courses, but he did not show any desire. After another successful RAID in 1968, he was given the highest award of a soldier, a vacation home. When Jim returned, he learned the terrible news that the platoon's luck had run out without him. Friends went on another task, but with them there was no "one who was taken away", and there was no one to smell the danger in time. The platoon was ambushed and only its name remained.
Something broke inside, and Jim blamed himself for the deaths of his comrades. "What am I fighting for? he thought, and couldn't find an answer. The fight was abruptly stopped, and the depression started in my head swarmed dark thoughts. After completing his term, he left the army and returned to the reservation. The boy Hukipi matured, matured, and adult beyond his years, he felt pain for his tribe, which
looked at new look. Beggars, reduced to despair and alcohol, living on handouts, without prospects and hope, and yet... such relatives. Jim remembered his skills as a Builder and started building Chiki, traditional Seminole homes. Hollywood did its job and the Indian theme became popular. Chukie decided on this play, saying: "This Chica can build only a true Indian. Everything else is nothing more than a fake."Very soon his Chicks appeared in parks, private clubs, and in the yards of the rich. Business quickly grew and he became one of the most successful members of the tribe (although the entire tribe was less than 1.5 thousand people).
Now it was possible to deal with public Affairs. The problem was obvious, the reservation was chosen by drug couriers as a transit point. Seaplanes loaded with cocaine from Central America regularly landed in the swamps, and from there the poison spread further. The former special forces officer decided: "we need to eliminate the root cause."He loaded a revolver, took a Winchester in the boat, and persuaded a couple of friends, also veterans of the Vietnam war, to go with him. Then from the marshes began to hear gunfire and explosions, but Hookie always came out unscathed. Very soon, the drug traffic through the reservation disappeared forever.
Hokie admired, began to be afraid, his voice on the tribal Council became very important and in 1979-m to year Hokie became the Supreme leader. Jim announced, " it's time for a change. We are Seminoles, we are a great tribe, and it is time for us to regain our greatness."
The chief received the tribe in a very deplorable state. But Hokie was a clear plan:"we Should open on the RES hall to play Bingo. If it goes well, we'll open a casino."He considered the situation and realized that he needed serious help. A friend told him about an old man-a pensioner who can help. This grandfather's name was Mayer Lansky.
Mayer Lansky was a well-known figure in the underworld. He was the brain of a huge underground Empire that controlled the Jewish and Italian mafia.
Hokie got a meeting with an old gangster.
Old Mayer was sitting at a table. He looked tired and listless.
"So I know why you came to me. Why do you need money? Lansky asked.
"I want to open a case."started Hookipa.
"You want to start a business and get rich."- with a grin said the pensioner.
The Indian understood that full frankness was needed with Meyer. Something leaped in his chest and he spoke, breaking into a low cry:
"Yes, I want to be rich, I won't deny it. Everyone wants it. But more than that, I want to finally get my tribe out of the shit we've been living in for more than 120 years. Do you know what it's like to live on a reservation? Live outside the line like animals? When people look down on you with disdain? I grew up on a chimpanzee farm, and I remember that tourists looked at me and the monkeys as curiosities. We live in bestiality, we have a beggar sitting on a beggar and driving beggars, and everyone is trying to somehow feed themselves. Land, freedom, and pride were taken from us, and in return they gave us alcohol and meager handouts. We have almost lost our language and our faith. From day to day, from year to year, from decade to decade, it's the same thing. We will soon stop being ourselves. You will not believe it, but many of us almost can not read and write. I am not the prophet Moses who brought you out of Egypt, but I love my little people. And I want, I really want to make it prosperous. And I will do it, no matter what it takes. I could, of course, succeed for myself by going somewhere else, but is it worthy of a man? If I am not for myself, who is for me? But if I am only for myself, then why am I? And if not now, then? Do you understand me, Mr. Lansky???"
Mayer was no longer sprawled out. His hands were clenched into fists, his eyes glittered, and his face was tight with muscle. It seemed that the old bandit remembered something, something long forgotten, but painfully native. Hokie paused, and Lansky looked at him, breathing hard.
"I heard you. I understand you. the old man dropped it slowly. "I used to be myself... however, let's not talk about it.. Lansky sighed heavily.
"And how will you perform this miracle?"
"I want to open a bingo hall where people can play big. If it goes well, then open a casino. I think there will be a lot of demand."the chief replied.
"My boy, I understand you. Casinos in Florida. This is a pipe dream of my life. There are thousands of problems and pitfalls on the way, but the main ones are two. The first is this Catholic Church and Archbishop McCarthy himself, the head of the Catholic Church in Florida. The priests hold the "bingo for charity" market firmly in their tenacious hands. These bigots with a mind so Holy, and in fact, much worse than the gangsters from the East side, so I do know. They fill their pockets, buy real estate and jewelry, and if they allocated at least one percent of what they have for good deeds, they could feed all the world's hungry for 10 years. The second difficulty is that the bureaucrats will never be allowed to open a casino in Florida. It's easier to negotiate with the wall. If you knew how much money, time, and effort my friends and I spent on these stupid and stubborn donkeys in Tallahassee (the capital of Florida). These fools can't see past their noses. "Mr. Lansky, I know what you're capable of. If there is a wizard in the world, it is you. I understand that you didn't succeed, but I will open a bingo hall and a casino."
"My dear fellow, as soon as you open the doors, the police will come and close the shop. And you will lose in court."
"You see, I have two trumps that you and your friends didn't have. Listen."
And, carefully looking around, Hokie whispered something almost in my ear Lansky. Old Mayer's mouth dropped open in surprise.
"It can't be. My boy, are you sure? Is this really true?"what is it?" he asked.
- "Certainly. Why else would I come to you? However, your lawyers will be able to verify my words."Yes," said the chief.
- "Amusingly. Here is the deal, this is on our way. Yes... it's going to be a nice job, we'll RUB the nose of these bureaucrats."
Lansky had a mischievous smile on his face.
"So you will give money?"asked Hokie.
"Where did I get the money? I live on a modest pension. But I have a good friend, Jack Cooper, I think if I ask him very much, he will not refuse the loan. Perhaps I can persuade some of my friends to politely ask the Archbishop not to interfere with us. I also know a couple of lawyers who will agree to help us for a nominal amount. By the way, you will need a good adviser on a regular basis. I would suggest an old friend of mine, Stephen Wilden. He is a reliable man, by the way, also served two terms in Vietnam."- almost accidentally showed his awareness of the gangster.
"And to manage the casino itself, I have in mind a guy from a very good family, his name is James Weissman. A very competent young man, and his brother, Eugene, can also help with various minor difficulties. You're not going to object if the order will be watching very responsible and decent people? Lansky half-asked, half-pointed, and stared at Hukipi.
"Of course I won't! Agreed. I am very happy."the chief replied, and they shook hands.
Cooper did lend money to the Indians without complaint, and Wilden began to spend a surprising amount of time on the reservation. And the Weissman brothers gave up all their business altogether and began to focus solely on helping the Seminoles. And very soon a new building with a major bingo game opened on the reservation. And the amazing thing is that Archbishop McCarthy has not objected to bingo on the reservation and even good luck to Jim.
As Lansky predicted, the police showed up on the first day and arrested employees and managers. And of course the Seminoles sued, claiming they had every right to do anything on their land.
"This is not acceptable. What kind of arbitrariness? Your Honor, we must close this receptacle of Vice and sin."- officials groaned.
- "Really. The only place where gambling is allowed in the United States is Nevada. Do you have any arguments in your favor?"
"We have two, Your Honor."don't be embarrassed," said Jim Billy and his lawyers.
"First, look at the precedent. Russell and Elena Bryan, from the Chippewa tribe, lived quietly on a reservation in Minnesota. All of a sudden, the state sends them a property tax bill that they've never paid before. They challenged it, the case went to the Highest Court, and he decided that:
a) the state does not have the right to collect taxes on business or property on the reservation
b) the state has no right to regulate the business of Indians on their land. And the bingo hall is just the business on our land.
And second and foremost, Your Honor, we are not part of the United States at all. All Indian tribes surrendered to the U.S. government. Some earlier, some later, but all signed peace agreements and in fact admitted defeat. Everyone but us. We are the only tribe that has never surrendered to the palefaces. Our ancestors went to the Everglades, but they didn't give up. We are still at war with you. Since when does anyone have the right to dictate terms and indicate what to do to an undefeated opponent on their land?"
After hearing such arguments, the judge was forced to make a fair decision: - " the Seminoles should be left alone. Let them do what they want on their land, even play bingo, even open a casino. And neither the state nor the feds have the right to take a cent from their income."
And the money flowed to the reservation. Soon Jim opened a casino and the flow of money increased. The tribe paid its debts to Cooper ahead of time, though all the people recommended by Lansky remained in charge of the business. However, is it a pity some 47% of profits for good and honest people, especially if they are so good at helping business development. Moreover, they advised how to correctly open other casinos.
For example, in Tampa, they decided to build a large Parking lot, but it turned out that this place is an ancient burial of Seminoles.
"I will not allow the pale-faces to defile the graves of our ancestors. Or have you forgotten that we are still officially at war with you? If so, I'll remind you. We'll give You the fourth Seminole War. We lit the fires of combat and beat Tom-Toms" - shouted angrily Hokie.
- "Oops. We didn't even know. Forgive us. What do you want?"- the mayor's office asked, confused.
"Okay, so be it, build your Parking lot."- was replaced by anger at the mercy Hokie.
"Just give us a piece of land to bury our ancestors in another place, but still not far from the city."
"Ufff. That's all. You are welcome. This is a great place, right next to the highway and not far from the city. Just do everything culturally and organize a Museum. We will study you."- happily breathed out officials.
- "Perfectly. Agreed."grinned the leader .... the Seminoles built a second casino.
"Er, that's not what we agreed to."no!" yelled the bureaucrats.
- "So we are about the world, too, did not agree and the Tomahawks we are not buried" - wisely said Jukie.
"Where's the Museum??? Where is he? Keep your word!"
"Where? Yes, inside the casino. Come and take a look. the chief laughed.
And the stream of money became a full-flowing river. There was so much money that the Seminoles even bought a stake in a casino on St. Martin and started building more casinos in Florida. True, there were dirty rumors that almost disinterested Seminole assistants were taking cash out of hundreds of boxes in private planes to various offshore locations, but all curious people were shown documents that clearly said they were taking food for the needy, and ridiculous rumors were a shame to believe.
The leader gained strength and developed a stormy activity. Electric companies that laid their networks, gas companies that stretched their pipes, garbage processing companies that buried waste, and other companies that rented land from the Seminoles for a penny, received an unpleasant surprise.
"That's it, the freebie is over."said Hokie.
"Now you will pay a fair rent. Otherwise, you will all go away."
Jim knew perfectly well that companies that had buried pipes and networks worth tens of millions would not go anywhere and would accept all his terms. And the flow of money has become even greater.
For almost 22 years, Hukipi led his small tribe with an iron hand. He became the highest-paid employee in Florida. Hukipi established a system of dividends for each Seminole, created a special Fund that provides any absolutely free medical care to all members of the tribe, and established schools on the reservation where learning the native language and traditions was mandatory. Moreover, every Indian can now get an education at any University in the United States and does not have to pay a penny for it.
Money was invested in real estate, energy, tourism, securities, and of course ... in the new casino. Money brought money and the tribe grew rich before our eyes. The Indians had beautiful new homes and expensive cars. But everything ends sooner or later, the chief noticed that the Council of chiefs began to spend a lot of money on themselves. Each of the leaders spent unaccountable millions and did not even think to answer to the tribe. And when Hokie was outraged and decided to investigate, he was dismissed from the post of the Supreme leader.
As usual, the official reason was accusations of sexual harassment of a subordinate. Then he was accused of corruption and abuse of power. But the former chief sued and... won. As a result, the tribe paid him more than $600,000. He retired, started building his Chiki again, and lived happily ever after. But the tribe is mired in corruption and scandals, because big money brings big problems. And in 2011, Hukipi was elected chief again.
Hukipi broke up corrupt officials, stopped the vicious practice of paying minors ' money to parents who might have squandered it, put things in order in reporting, and invested in new projects. Surprisingly, without corruption, there was again extra money, which turned into additional dividends for the Indians. Now every adult Seminole, in addition to free medicine and education, receives $128,000 a year. And the money of minors now goes to a special trust so that every member of the tribe reaches the age of 18 is already a multi-millionaire.
In 2016, the year once again, the Council leaders decided to shift Jucie. It is visible it strongly interfered with a free life. Now Jim Hookipa on the deserved rest. He is only 73 years old and still full of strength and energy. Who knows, maybe the Seminoles will need a strong hand and wise advice again, and then "the one who was taken" will again become a leader and lead his tribe to new heights. It is not for nothing that the popular wisdom says: "a Herd of rams led by a lion is much stronger than a flock of lions led by a RAM."

"Kirk! Don't stop shooting!" said Marcus.
The beasts ran through the western town and we emptied our Colt revolvers and Winchester repeaters into the square. I hid behind cover as the arrows and bullets flew over my head.
As I prepared to make a stand against the evil coming upon us, I flash back on how this all started.
My name is Kirk "Waya" Walker.
I am Half Cherokee and Half White. I grew up in the Mountains of North Carolina, mainly on the reservation.
I am a descendant of a long line of warriors in my tribe. As members of this great nation, we uphold our warrior spirit serving in the armed forces. My Great Grandfather, was a Marine Windtalker. My Grandfather was Army, 101st Airborne, and My Father served with Pathfinders. I myself did two tours in some non-disclosed locations with Marine Raiders.
From a young age, hunting and shooting has been taught with extreme discipline to those in tribe of warrior descent. Most of us, however, end up working a cop gig with reservation police, security at the casino, or service industry activities.
As a proclaimed marksman and revolver expert, I scored a job at the local western amusement park with my best friend and warrior brother, Marcus.
The park off the reservation was located on the side of a mountain in the smokies near a quiet little tourist town. Families would dress up as Cowboys and "Indians" and tour the park riding rides, eating, and having fun. The park had a small western town, a tribal themed land, and a roller coaster built on the side of the mountain. It was only accessible to the guests by skylift or a small train that went up the steep slope to the top.
I had gone to the park as child and had many fond memories. My job was the attraction I had loved the most, gun-fighting.
Ever since the park opened back in the sixties there have been shows in the town square every 90 mins. Actors have scripted shootouts in the streets armed with blank ammunition. The kid's go crazy for it as they stand on the edge of the street and watch a bank robbery get botched, a showdown, or a new Marshall clean up the streets.
As I begun working there, I was full of enthusiasm and people enjoyed my performances in the showdowns. The other members of the staff started calling me "Kirk the Quick" and my Cherokee brethren called me "The Wolf" as that is the translation for my middle name, Waya.
The other actors were cool. Three other brothers of my tribe, Frank Dawson, and the Wilson brothers, Jake and Paul, both identical twins. Mark Sampson was the oldest of the group. John Humbert and Bill Galloway, two best friends that came from Texas to enjoy the mountains. Last we had a kid named Tommy who was looking for a job while on summer break from UNC Asheville.
There were scripts written where I was good, bad, killed, and even one where I got to be the Marshall. I was having a blast. Even though the depiction of my heritage could appear insulting, the owners of the park seemed very respectful.
Until, the incident... The day before the park closed for good.
I woke up in my cabin and stepped on the porch for my morning cigarette. Normally, a 10-15 minute process because I smoke American Spirits (Don't judge me, heathens.). I looked out as the fog draped the mountains and slowly scanned the yard enjoying the peace.
Then, I saw my Grandfather standing in the yard.
He was staring at me in full tribal gear with war paint on his face. As a Veteran of what the government calls "The Korean Conflict", I knew him to boast warrior spirit. His headdress with a screaming eagle painted on it.
I approached him. "Good morning, Grandfather. I did not hear you arrive... Would you like to come inside?"
His stare grew more angered.
"My grandson, The Wolf. Your mettle and those you share combat with will be tested this day. Forty years ago, Men from across the ocean settled these lands and interrupted prosperity. Today, is the rising day of a great chief who rests the land they disturb. If you return, we shall celebrate with a great feast. Go to war and defend our nation once more."
He held up his hand to me, closed his eyes, turned around, and retreated to the forest.
My Grandfather was a little kooky in his age, but he never did anything like this to me before.
I went back inside and called my dad to no answer. I had to get to work, so I sent him a long text and got ready. As I pulled up to work, I received a reply from my dad.
"I will see you, tonight. May the spirits guide us to victory."
I was confused. But I had no time. I had to check my gear and suit up for the first show. I was thankful I had no lines in the first act.
I walked into the dressing room and suited up. Then came the fun.
As I did back to back shows, strange things started happening in the park.
The skylift broke down and the train got stuck at the bottom of the mountain. We had to bring guests that wanted to leave down the employee entrance road by shuttle. The two park restaurants lost power and we couldn't serve food. Every now and the a strange feedback came on the park speakers. Almost like a panting animal was on the mic. People began leaving earlier then usual.
As the final show of the day came around, I checked the ammo that Marcus loaded for me. I ran up to the second floor of the saloon. My guns felt a little heavier than normal
My role in this show was to be shot off the roof by the Marshall and land in the hay below. I am to shoot at Marcus, play dead and fall safely to a mattress pile disguised by the hay. I was to wait for the first gunshot to be my queue and slam open the shutters, coming out blazing.
I had done this a million times. Nothing to freak out about.
The first gunshot went off. It was followed by two more shots and screams. Instead of slamming the shutters open, I peaked through the crack.
It was chaos.
The streets were being evacuated and an ensuing gunfight began with the actors and a few members of the audience. Screeching noises came from their mouths, and they had glowing red eyes. They were armed with revolvers and bows.
I scanned the street and saw Tommy struggling in the action across the street. I watched in horror as a steel arrow pierced his skull followed by three more arrows that pinned his torso to the wall of the general store. His lifeless body crucified to an amusement park gift shop.
"The battle is beginning, Grandson." said a voice from behind me.
I turned in fear to discover my Grandfather behind me. He stared into my eyes.
"The chief has raised his warriors in revenge and hate. Honor our family and clean our names. GO AND FIGHT!!!" he screamed.
I looked to the window. Marcus was shooting at the possessed warriors. With real ammo. I then realized why my guns were heavier.
"KIRK!! GET OUT HERE!!" shouted Marcus.
I emerged from the window leaving my grandfather behind. I forward rolled off the roof into the hay and emerged with my weapons drawn. I fired 4 shots at the possessed and got 3 of them. As they fell their bodies became ash.
8 rounds left till reload.
As a revolver junkie, counting rounds is second nature to me.
I ran across the street to Marcus. 3 more rounds for 3 more of them.
5 bullets to go.
I ducked into cover with him. Marcus turned to me.
"Reload now, brother. This is going to get intense and we're in for it."
"What the..." was all I could manage to get out when I saw my father emerge with men from the rez.
"HOLD THIS LINE!!" my father shouted. He threw a tomahawk at one of the demonic warriors. I looked across to the line of cover that had been formed at our end of the square and noticed we were protecting to exit to the park.
Mark quickly approached my father with Bill, John, and Frank closely behind.
"Mike, let me leave you Marcus and the twins. Your guardians and them can defend the exit. We can push forward and take out the Chief."
"They must not be allowed to leave. I will grant your request, Mr. Sampson. Charge the Tribal section of the park and send this evil tribes' chief straight to hell. Kirk. Go with them now."
I know war. I know fighting. I can instantly enter that state of mind without reason. I was questioning in the back of my mind what was going on until it became clear to me.
"They died here, didn't they?" I asked my father.
He looked down with tears in his eyes.
"Yes." he softly answered.
My Grandfather told me of a battle that took place in the mountains between a tribe and the U.S. Army a long time ago. My Cherokee and Creek ancestors were forced out of the lands to Oklahoma. The tribe he told of, the Oconostota, began to walk the trail. After the loss of a few children and elders, the warriors became filled with hate and revenge.
They performed a power ritual and began massacring the soldiers escorting them to their fate. After much fighting and killing, they returned to the mountains, consumed by evil. They Army returned with three gatling guns and a battalion of 200 men. They cut down every last one of them. Before the Chief died, he placed a hex on the fallen and swore he would return to avenge his people.
I snapped to and began to posse up with the boys. I reloaded back to 12 rounds. I holstered my colts and picked up a pump action shotgun. I grabbed a bandolier of shells and waited for a signal to move.
A strange mist rolled in from the "Indian" side of the park.
Then we heard the barking... The growling...
My father stood still.
"The beasts are here. PREPARE YOURSELVES!!!" he shouted.
Suddenly the barking got louder and and the shadows of dogs began approaching fast.
I waited till the first dog was in front of my muzzle. The hell-hound emerged from the mist with fangs deployed. I squeezed the trigger immediately and began pumping them out till empty.
I ducked back into cover to see Bill get jumped by one of the beasts. It scratched him up and disarmed him. I reloaded as fast as I could but two more jumped on him and began tearing him apart. The first demon dog began ripping his throat out as they others tore his limbs off.
I pumped the shotgun and fired two shots. The spread killed the dogs and mercy killed Bill. The best I could do for him to stop the pain and suffering.
I looked up to see John filled with tears in his eyes. He nodded to me and picked up Bill's machete. In his other hand he had a stick of Dynamite. He quickly taped it to the machete and lit the fuse.
He picked up a tomahawk in his other and ran in to the mist hacking and slashing the enemies. We seemed to understand his goal and began firing to clear him a path up the square.
"COME GET A PIECE OF TEXAS, YOU BASTARDS!!!!!" he shouted.
All the beasts and enemies ran after him as he disappeared in the mist. He let out the loudest hollar, I've ever heard. Then boom went the dynamite.
The explosion ceased the fight and cleared a path through the haunted mist.
"Now is our chance! Mark! Frank! Kirk! CHARGE!!!!" my father shouted.
I dropped my empty shotgun to the ground. I drew both colts and followed mark along his left side while frank ran to his right. We shot our way into the Indian land.
The Chief of the tribe stood in front of a large campfire. His face demonic and evil.
"The white devil blood flows in your veins!! You will all pay for the disgrace and pain we endured!!" he shouted.
We aimed our weapons at him. He was then struck by an arrow in the chest. I felt it pass by head from behind. I turned around to see my grandfather with his bow drawn.
He approached the Demon Chief and spoke to him in our native tongue. The conversation was quick.
My Grandfather picked up a heavy rock and crushed his head with it. He turned to us.
"You must all go. Right now. These beasts must not be allowed to leave the mountain. The curse will be lifted after the final wave attempts to leave. Go now! Your father needs help!"
Mark turned to us.
I served with grandfather in the war. We will hold them off together. You two get back to the line and save the world!"
Frank and I ran for it to the exit and Dove behind the cover rejoining the line.
"Final Wave is coming, Dad." I said to him reloading.
"Son, the final wave is a never ending demonic battalion. You were supposed to kill the Chief and seal off the portal. Only someone from our bloodline can do it!"
Then we heard the clasp of a strange noise. The smokey mountain mist cleared.
Mark emerged from the Mist. He was upset and a little injured. He embraced my father.
I looked to Mark.
"Why are you walking? Where is my grandfather?" I asked.
My father turned to me
"Your grandfather sealed them away. They will come back, but not for a long, long time. He sacrificed himself with his noble blood. Now we must leave this wretched place and celebrate our fallen as warrior customs have foretold."
"I need a bottle of Wild Turkey. Let's celebrate this victory and your crazy ass grandpa."
The owners of the park went bankrupt and it is now deserted. There was an attempt recently to revive the park but it fell through. Thank God...
I left the Rez and moved to the city. I will never go back at this point. I finally found a nice office job after using my GI Bill to get my degree.
I have to say... I am pretty proud to have been a western gunfighter...
